What’s Acupuncture
Acupuncture originated in China more than 5,000 years ago. It is an ancient medical treatment of inserting fine sterilized needles into the body to regulate the body’s “universal life energy” or “Chi”. The ancient Chinese believed that the Chi presents in every living creature and circulates throughout the body along the specific pathways that are called meridians. As long as this Chi flows freely, health is maintained; but once the flow of energy is blocked, the system is disrupted and pain and illness occur.
The research shows that inserting needles at these acupuncture points stimulates
sensory receptors. This in turn stimulates nerves that transmit impulses to the hypothalamic-pituitary system in the brain. The hypothalamus-pituitary glands are responsible for releasing neurotransmitters and endorphins, the body’s natural pain-killing hormones.
Endorphins play a significant role in the hormonal system, which is why acupuncture is effective in treating pain and infertility. The substances released as a result of acupuncture relax the body, and also regulate serotonin in the brain, which affects emotional states. Other physiological effects include increased circulation, decreased inflammation, relief of muscle spasms, and increased T-cell count, which supports the immune system.
